You’ve made the decision. You’re heading to Ericeira — Portugal’s World Surf Reserve — to try surfing for the first time. But what actually happens on your first lesson? What should you expect, and how do you make the most of it?
At Sea Krew, we’ve coached hundreds of first-timers from complete beginners to confident wave riders. Here’s exactly what to expect — no surprises, just waves.

Before You Hit the Water
Your lesson starts on land. Before touching the ocean, your Sea Krew instructor covers the essentials: how to position yourself on the board, the pop-up technique, paddling mechanics, and — most importantly — how to read a wave and stay safe in the water.
This isn’t a formality. A solid 20–30 minutes on the sand can be the difference between standing up on your first wave or spending the session fighting the basics. We take it seriously so you progress from day one.
Choosing the Right Spot and Conditions
Ericeira has multiple breaks — and not all of them are right for beginners. One of the biggest advantages of surfing with a local instructor is spot selection. Your coach will assess swell height, wind direction, tide, and crowd levels to choose the safest, most appropriate beach for your level.
For first-timers, that typically means gentle whitewater (broken waves) — perfect for building confidence without being overwhelmed. As you progress through the session, your instructor will move you into position to catch your first unbroken green waves.

In the Water: Your First Waves
Most beginners start in the whitewater zone — where waves have already broken and the water is calm enough to practise standing up. Your instructor wades in with you, pushes you into waves, and gives real-time feedback after each ride.
Expect to fall — a lot. That’s completely normal and part of the process. What matters is that you’re in a safe environment, under close supervision, with a coach who stays within arm’s reach throughout your first session.

The Pop-Up: Your Most Important Skill
The pop-up is the movement that takes you from lying on the board to standing on a wave. It’s the most technically demanding part of learning to surf — and the one thing we drill hardest from day one.
A correct pop-up uses both hands flat on the board (not the rails), a powerful chest push, and a fluid motion that brings both feet under you simultaneously. Many self-taught surfers develop bad habits here that hold them back for years. With proper coaching, you fix this from the very first session.

What You’ll Leave With
After a 2-hour surf lesson with Sea Krew in Ericeira, most beginners leave with:
- A solid understanding of ocean safety and surf etiquette
- A repeatable pop-up technique that will serve you for years
- The experience of riding their first wave — often many waves
- A clear picture of what to work on next
- A genuine love for the ocean — and maybe the start of a longer surf camp journey
