Inside a Beginner Surf Lesson in Ericeira: A Real Session

Beginner Surf Lesson · Ericeira · Portugal

Most articles about your first surf lesson describe it. This one shows it. The photos below are from one real beginner session on the Ericeira coast with a Sea Krew coach: two brothers, soft-top boards, a September morning, waist-deep whitewater. Nothing staged, nothing cut.

If you are thinking about booking a surf lesson in Ericeira and want to know what actually happens between arriving on the sand and walking out of the water, this is it, step by step.

By Rui Ferreira — Founder of Sea Krew, surf coach since 2004.

In short: a beginner surf lesson runs in five stages: beach briefing, pop-up practice on the sand, first whitewater rides with the coach beside you, standing up, and a debrief. Board and wetsuit are included. Conditions decide the beach and the timing, never the other way round.

Step 1 — The briefing on the sand

Before anyone touches the water: waves, currents, where to stand, how to fall.

Every lesson starts on land, under the Sea Krew umbrella. The coach explains how the waves are breaking that morning, where the safe zone is, how to hold the board in whitewater and how to fall away from it rather than onto it. Rip currents get three minutes of plain-language explanation, because understanding them is what removes the fear.

This is also where the beach gets chosen. Ericeira and Santa Cruz have several sandy beginner beaches, and the coach picks the one with the gentlest, cleanest conditions for the day. The lesson adapts to the ocean, not the other way round.

Step 2 — Pop-up practice, dry

Lie down, paddle, push, feet. Repeated on the sand until it starts to feel automatic.

The pop-up is the single movement that decides whether you ride a wave or fall off it, so it is drilled on the sand first, where there is nothing else to think about. Position on the board, hands under the chest, a push and a single movement to your feet. The coach corrects stance and foot placement here, one detail at a time.

It looks simple. It is simple. It just needs repetition before the ocean adds movement and timing to the equation.

Step 3 — Into the whitewater

The first rides happen on the knees. That is exactly how it is supposed to go.

Beginner lessons happen in the whitewater, the already-broken waves close to shore, at waist to chest depth. The coach stays beside you, positions the board and gives you the push at the right moment. The first few rides are usually on the knees or in a crouch, and that is not a failure. It is how your body learns the speed and the balance of a moving board before adding the pop-up.

Step 4 — Standing up

Arms out, knees bent, eyes forward. The moment it clicks.

At some point in the session it comes together: the push, the pop-up and the balance land in the same second and you are standing on a wave. Most beginners get there in the first lesson. Some in the first twenty minutes, some near the end, and the ocean has a say in that. What the coach controls is the number of good attempts you get, the timing of each push and the one correction that matters most for the next wave.

Coach’s note: look at the beach, not at your feet. Where your eyes go, your weight follows. It is the correction I make most often in a first lesson, and it fixes half the wobbles on its own.

Step 5 — The debrief and the stoke

The lesson ends back on the sand with a short debrief: what worked, what to fix, and what the next session would look like if you want to keep going. Because our groups are small, this is specific to your surfing, not a general speech.

Frequently asked questions

How long is a first surf lesson?

Around two hours in total: roughly twenty to thirty minutes on the sand for the briefing and pop-up practice, and the rest in the water.

Will I stand up in my first lesson?

Most beginners ride whitewater waves standing up in their first session. We do not guarantee it, because the ocean is involved, but the whitewater, the soft-top board and the coach’s push are all there to make it as likely as possible.

Do I need to be a strong swimmer?

You need to be comfortable in water at waist to chest depth. Beginner lessons stay in shallow whitewater with a buoyant board attached to your ankle and a coach beside you.

Which beach will the lesson be at?

It depends on the day. The coach chooses between the sandy beginner beaches around Ericeira and Santa Cruz based on swell, wind and tide, always favouring the safest and cleanest option for your level.

Are photos included?

Yes. Sessions are photographed whenever possible, and you receive your photos afterwards, exactly like the ones in this article.
